1.  Introduction

This document specifies the Service Monitoring Textual Conventions (TC).
All XCMI conforming management agents, which implement the Service
Monitoring MIB, SHALL implement the General group in the XCMI Service
Monitoring MIB.

This Service Monitoring TC supports the companion Service Monitoring MIB
(published separately).

This Service Monitoring TC supports simple service management on host
systems, conformant with POSIX System Administration: Part 4 - Printing
Interfaces (IEEE 1387.4, Draft 8, October 1994).

This Service Monitoring TC has been written in ASN.1 (OSI Abstract
Syntax Notation One - CCITT X.208/209 | ISO 8824/8825), using the IETF
SMI for SNMPv2 (Structure of Management Information - RFC
1442/1902/2578), the IETF TC for SNMPv2 (Textual Conventions - RFC
1443/1903/2579), the IETF CONF for SNMPv2 (Conformance Statements - RFC
1444/1904/2580), and the IETF Host Resources MIB (RFC 2790) macros and
textual conventions.

2.  SNMP Network Management Framework

See section 2 'The SNMP Network Management Framework' in the XCMI
General TC (06gentc).

3.  Managed Object Usage

3.1. Overview of Groups in Service Monitoring MIB

Six object groups are specified in the Service Monitoring MIB. Diagrams
of their relationships appear below: brief comment (eg, 'Alerts') above
each box; object group name (eg, 'Event') inside each box; conformance
level in parentheses ('(Mandatory)' or '(Cond Mand)') inside each box.

Diagrams of their relationships with parallel groups in the XCMI
Security MIB, the IETF Host Resources MIB, and the XCMI Ext to Host
Resources MIB appear on the following pages.

Six object groups are specified in the Service Monitoring MIB, as
follows:

1)  General Group (Mandatory)
    - 'xcmSvcMonGeneralTable' contains one entry for general information
    on the service monitoring subsystem on this host system
    - the entry (always) supports a service monitoring subsystem version
    ID and version date
    - the entry (always) supports a terse conformance statement of ALL
    mandatory, conditionally mandatory, and optional IETF Host Resources
    MIB (RFC 2790) and XCMI HRX MIB object groups which are supported by
    a given management agent implementation;

2) Associated Queue Group (Conditionally Mandatory)
    Defines a set of managed objects which may be used to
    - create and destroy dynamic conceptual rows
    - identify the queue namespace 'domain' (eg, NetWare NDS)
    - identify the queue 'path' (ie, full network path)
    - identify the queue 'simple name' (for use with queue 'path')
    - specify whether the queue is 'on system' (ie, local host system)
    or 'off system' (ie, some remote system);

3) Associated Queue Ext Group (Conditionally Mandatory)
    Defines a set of managed objects which may be used to
    - identify the next (ie, downstream) queue in a 'sequence of queues'
    - report the current queue 'state' and 'conditions'
    - report the current queue 'fault count', 'fault code' (numeric),
    and 'fault string' (human-readable string)
    - report the conceptual row create date/time
    - report the conceptual row total of all jobs ever queued, since row
    create date/time - report the last connect (and/or login) date/time
    (for a remote or local external queue)
    - report the total of all jobs queued AND subsequently completed,
    since the last connect (and/or login) date/time (for a remote or
    local external queue);

4)  Service Group (Conditionally Mandatory)
    Defines a set of managed objects which may be used to
    - create and destroy dynamic conceptual rows
    - identify the service by 'name'
    - identify the current/previous service states (ie, DPA generic
    state)
    - identify the service conditions (ie, DPA generic state reasons)
    - identify the service availability (ie, DPA generic availability)
    - identify the associated physical device
    - identify the associated logical device
    - identify the associated external device
    - identify the associated software running
    - identify the associated software installed
    - identify the associated storage
    - identify the service priority
    - identify the service type;

5) Service Detail Group (Conditionally Mandatory)
    Defines a set of managed objects which may be used to
    - identify the service detail class (eg, 'jobTemplateServer')
    - identify the service detail type (eg, 'systemName')
    - identify the service detail instance (ie, index)
    - create and destroy dynamic conceptual rows
    - contain the service detail value as integer, OID, and/or string;

6) Service Mgmt Group (Conditionally Mandatory)
    Defines a set of managed objects which may be used to
    - specify service management request operations (eg, 'serviceClean')
    - specify any (optional) service management request data (arguments)
    - return service management request status (initial and final)
    - return service management request in progress status
    - return (optional) service management request complete traps.

3.2. Relationship of Service Monitoring MIB to other MIBs

3.2.1.  IETF Host Resources MIB

The Service Monitoring MIB may be used to manage entries in the Software
Running, Software Running Performance, and Software Installed groups in
the IETF HR MIB, passing requests and authentication information in the
'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmt[Operation|Data]' objects.

3.2.2. XCMI Ext to Host Resources MIB

The Service Monitoring MIB may be used to manage entries in the Software
Running Ext and Software Installed Ext groups in the XCMI HRX MIB,
passing requests and authentication information in the
'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmt[Operation|Data]' objects.

3.2.3.  XCMI Security MIB

Without the use of the Security MIB, the Service Monitoring MIB offers
NO authentication, authorization, or accounting for service management
performed.

3.2.4.  XCMI System Admin MIB

The Service Mgmt group in the Service Monitoring MIB is a lightweight
alternative to support of the XCMI System Admin MIB (which provides
high-function system admin capabilities, with attendant significant
implementation cost).

3.3.  Service Mgmt Requests

3.3.1. Format and Protocol of Service Mgmt Requests

A 'service mgmt request' is conceptually 'executed' against an on-system
service configured on the managed host system.

For each 'service mgmt request', human-readable strings shall ALWAYS be
in the fixed 'locale' of the main 'CPU' on the managed host system and
localized according to the value of 'xcmGenFixedLocalizationIndex'
(indexed by 'hrDeviceIndex', references 'xcmGenLocalizationTable') in
the XCMI General MIB, for the 'CPU' device.

* 'service mgmt request' - an XCMI conforming management station may use
the Service Monitoring MIB and send a single SNMP-Set PDU containing:

1)  (Mandatory)
    A service mgmt request (eg, 'serviceEnable') in
    'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation', which augments
    'xcmSvcMonServiceTable' in this MIB;

2)  (Conditionally Mandatory)
    Any (optional) request arguments, in 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtData';

3a)  (Optional)
    If the security mode of the managed system is 'direct
    authentication', user authentication info in 'xcmSecUserMgmtData'
    (with XCMI standard tags) in the XCMI Security MIB; or

3b)  (Optional)
    If the security mode of the managed system is 'source
    authentication', implicit user authentication info in the SNMP
    Set-Request PDU source transport address; or

3c)  (Optional)
    If the security mode of the managed system is 'session
    authentication', implicit user authentication info in
    'xcmSecToken[Index|RowStatus]' in the XCMI Security MIB.

* 'job mgmt response' - an XCMI conforming management agent shall ALWAYS
perform the following actions:

1)  (Mandatory)
    Save the parsing result value of SNMP 'error-status' in
    'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtStatus';

2)  (Mandatory)
    Send a single SNMP Set-Response PDU containing an 'error-status'
    indicating acceptance or rejection of the 'job mgmt request' (if
    rejection, then skip following steps);

Xerox XCMI Working Group File '58svctc.dfm' Version 5.9 [Page 10]

Xerox Common Management Interface (XCMI) Standard 01/21/20

3)  (Mandatory)
    Set 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtInProgress' to 'true';

    <...processing..>

4)  (Mandatory)
    Set 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtStatus' to the final result of the
    operation;

5)  (Mandatory)
    Set 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtInProgress' to 'false'; and

6)  (Optional)
    Generate an 'xcmSvcMonServiceMmgtV2Event' trap which includes the
    'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtStatus' final result of the operation.

3.3.2. Example of Service Enable Request

Given a fixed 'locale' specification:

    [in IETF Host Resources MIB - RFC 2790]
    hrDeviceType[1]                     = 'hrDeviceProcessor' -- CPU
    [in XCMI General MIB - 07gen]
    xcmGenFixedLocalizationIndex[1]     = '1' -- valid locale
    xcmGenLocalizationLanguage[1,1]     = 'EN' -- (english)
    xcmGenLocalizationCountry[1,1]      = 'US' -- (USA)
    xcmGenLocalizationCharacterSet[1,1] = 'iso646' -- US ASCII / ISO 646

A simple request to enable (permit the acceptance of jobs by) a service

3.4.  Service States and Conditions

3.4.1. Service States from ISO 10175 (DPA)

Two objects in the 'xcmSvcMonServiceTable' record the current state of
each service ('xcmSvcMonServiceCurrentState') and the immediate previous
state of each service ('xcmSvcMonServicePreviousState'). These objects
both have a syntax of 'XcmHrDpaState' (an enumeration).

See: 'XcmHrDpaState' in XCMI Ext to Host Resources TC (10hosttc).

'XcmHrDpaState' follows exactly the state names and state definitions of
the ISO Document Printing Application (ISO 10175) definition for the
generic state of any DPA object (some DPA objects, such as Job, have
more detailed or specific object states).

See: Section 9.1.6.4 [Generic attribute] 'State' in ISO 10175-1.

The 'xcmSvcMonServiceCurrentState' service states have the following
meanings:

State           Description of Service State
--------------  --------------------------------------------------------
ready(1) This service is ready to be used without human
                intervention.
onRequest(2) This service requires human intervention in order
                to be used (eg, an underlying device fault exists).
unavailable(3) This service is not available for use even with
                human intervention.
unknown(4) The state of this service is not known (eg, the state
                is indeterminate).
busy(5) This service is temporarily inaccessible due to dynamic
                constraints, but will become 'ready' without human
                intervention.
initializing(6) This service is being initialized (and is therefore
                temporarily inaccessible).
terminating(7) This service is being terminated (and is therefore
                permanently inaccessible).

3.4.2. Service Operations from IEEE 1387.4 (POSIX)

One object in the 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtTable' records the current
management operation on each service ('xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation').
This object has a syntax of 'XcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation' (an
enumeration).

See: 'XcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation' in XCMI Service Monitoring TC.

'XcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation' follows exactly the service operation
names and definitions from POSIX System Admin - Part 4 - Printing
Interfaces (IEEE 1387.4), the DPA Client specification that is a
companion to ISO DPA (ISO 10175). XCMI extension operations are also
defined.

See: Section 4 'Print Utilities' in POSIX System Admin - Part 4 -
Printing Interfaces (IEEE 1387.4).

The 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation' management operations (from
'XcmSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation' in the XCMI Service Monitoring TC) in
this FSM diagram have the following meanings:

Operation                   Description of Service Operation
--------------------------  --------------------------------------------
none(0)                     No operation
                            (an initialization value)
other(1)                    Other operation
                            (should NOT be used)
unknown(2)                  Unknown operation
                            (should NOT be used)

3.4.3.  Service Conditions (State Reasons)

One object in the 'xcmSvcMonServiceTable' records the current conditions
(ie, state reasons) on each service ('xcmSvcMonServiceConditions').
This object has a syntax of 'XcmHrDpaConditions' (a bit-mask).

See: 'XcmHrDpaConditions' in XCMI Ext to Host Resources TC.

3.4.4.  Service FSM State Diagram

The diagram on the following page shows all valid FSM (finite state
machine) service states as recorded by 'xcmSvcMonServiceCurrentState'
and 'xcmSvcMonServicePreviousState' objects in the Service Group of the
XCMI Service Monitoring MIB.

For example, a 'serviceCreate' operation yields the following sequence
of state values:

xcmSvcMonServiceCurrentState    xcmSvcMonServicePreviousState
------------------------------  ----------------------------------------
unknown(4)                      unknown(4)
initializing(6)                 unknown(4)
ready(1)                        initializing(6)

The service states are all defined in the 'XcmHrDpaState' textual
convention in the XCMI Ext to Host Resources TC (10hosttc), taken
directly from ISO 10175 - no new service states are introduced here.

The service management operations are all defined in the
'XcmHrSvcMonServiceMgmtOperation' textual convention in the XCMI Service
Monitoring TC.

The service basic conditions (per operations) are all defined in the
'XcmHrDpaConditions' textual convention in the XCMI Ext to Host
Resources TC.

The following state diagram conforms exactly to ISO 10175-3.

See: Section D.2.3 'Server State Transitions' in Document Printing
Application - Part 3 - Management Abstract Service Definition and
Procedures (ISO 10175-3).

Service management operations are shown below in single quotes (eg,
'serviceShutdown'). Service states are shown in lowercase without
quotes but with their state ordinal (eg, terminating(7)).

    DESCRIPTION
        "The most recent simple service management data specified for
        this conceptual row in the 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtTable'.

        XCMI service management commands are passed as strings in
        'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtData' in the XCMI Service Monitoring MIB.

        XCMI management commands MAY also require one or more arguments
        (in addition to any specific variable bindings of MIB objects).
        Required arguments are passed as 'tagged string arguments' in
        'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtData'.

        XCMI standard 'tags' for data in 'tagged string arguments',
        are specified in 'XcmHrDevMgmtCommandDataTag', or are
        as follows:

        --  Service Management Data
        -- Domain-specific operations that are only used in
        --  commands sent using xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtData.

      * DT  [Date and Time]

     XCMI standard 'system operation' types for use in 'SO' arguments
     (in 'xcmSvcMonServiceMgmtData') are as follows. The form of SO
     requests is 'SO=...'. This tagged data includes an extension
     to XcmHrDevMgmtCommandDataTag.

     Each 'tagged string argument' substring is of the form:
               'TT=value:'
          where:
               'TT' two-character 'tag', naming argument type
               '=' literal equal sign, beginning argument value
               'value' human-readable string, encoding argument value
               ':' literal colon, terminating argument value

           Some tags require a qualifier. For example, see
           'CreatePublicFolder'.
