Installing a Printer Connected via the USB Port

This section explains the settings for printing from a computer installed with Windows 2000/XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista to a printer connected via a USB port.

For Windows 2000 / XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista

Important
If the USB cable is connected, disconnect it.

Adding a printer

Start up the "Driver Installation Tool" from this CD-ROM and add a print driver to the computer.

There are seven steps.

  1. Click [Print/Fax Driver] in the [Main] tab of the Installation Menu.
  2. The Driver Installation Tool is activated and the [Driver Installation Tool - Setup] screen is displayed.

  3. Click [Custom].
  4. The [Driver Installation Tool - Select Connection Method] screen is displayed.

  5. Select [Local Printer] and click [Next].
  6. The [Local Printer] screen is displayed.

  7. Select the port to be used from [Port] and "WorkCentre 5020 PCL6" from [Model]. Then click [Next].
  8. The [Software License Agreement] screen is displayed.

  9. Read the contents of the agreement and check [Yes] if you agree. Then click [Install].
  10. Installation begins.

    A graphic of the printer, the printer model and the printer address are displayed.

    After the setup has been completed, the [Setup Complete] screen is displayed.

  11. Click [Finish].
  12. A confirmation message is displayed.

  13. Click [Yes].
  14. Installation is complete.

Setting up the USB port

Perform the following steps to continue with the print driver installation.

There are 10 steps.

  1. Switch off the printer.
  2. Note
    Continue with the setup without switching off the computer.

  3. Connect the USB cable.
  4. Important
    Make sure that the power of the printer is switched off when you connect the cable. There is risk of an electric shock.

  5. Switch on the printer.
  6. The computer will detect the new hardware automatically, and the required software will be installed. This is the end of the USB port setup.

  7. Click the Windows printers folder, and check the connection.
  8. The method of opening the printer folder varies depending on the OS being used.
    Windows 2000:
    Click [Start] - [Settings] - [Printers].
    Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:
    Click [Start] - [Printer and Fax].
    Windows Vista:
    Click [Start] - [Control Panel] - [Hardware and Sound] - [Printers].

    The [Printers] window is displayed.

  9. The printer icon is added simultaneously during the print driver installation. Right click on the added printer icon and select [Properties] (for Windows Vista, [Run as administrator] - [Properties]).
  10. The [Properties] dialog box is displayed.

  11. Check that the USB port is specified in [Print to the following port(s)] (for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, it is [Print to port]) in the [Port] tab.
  12. Select this port and click [Apply].

  13. In the [General] tab, click [Print Test Page].
  14. A dialog box for confirming if printing was done properly is displayed.

  15. Check the print result and if printing was done properly, click [Yes].
  16. Specify the options in the [Printer] tab or the [Device Settings] tab.

    Options must be specified.

  18. Click [OK] on the [Properties] dialog box.
  19. This is the end of the USB port setup for the printer.

Confirming the printers have been added

Perform the following procedure to find out if the printer icons have been created.

The printers folder is displayed. Check if the icons for the specified printers are in the folder.
